Hypnosis

Common questions asked when considering hypnosis
as a method for change

1. What is Hypnosis

Hypnosis uses the unconscious part of your mind to help make change. The unconscious mind is a reservoir of all your creativity and learning.   When the unconscious is tapped into, that stored learning is available to help you make change.  By relaxing conscious control, the helpful unconscious part of the mind is freed up to accept new ways of seeing, thinking, understanding, and behaving.

2. Will I remember what has occurred?

You will hear and remember everything that goes on, or what the unconscious part of your mind wants you to hear for your benefit.  All hypnosis is actually self-hypnosis.  It is nothing done to you, but a skill of relaxation that we do together.

3. How does it work?

The basis of hypnosis is trust.  Trust is developed by communicating - talking and listening.  You must be comfortable with me and me with you.  Initially we discus the problem, what you want to be different, ways you've attempted change in the past, etc.  Ideas for suggestions are developed during this conversation.  Questions/concerns about hypnosis are answered.  Then, during trance induction, relaxation techniques are used.  This is normally quite a pleasant experience. As the relaxation deepens, suggestions can be given, or perhaps we may converse about what is occurring for you.  The trance is completed on a positive, restful note, where you feel refreshed and focused.

Example:  If you want to stop smoking, in a trance I may bring up a past story of how you changed some other habit.  Your unconscious mind remembers that and will help you apply that experience to your present dilemma.
